New netball game offers fast route to sporting success
A new variation on the game of netball will be introduced at The Co-operative World Netball Series in Manchester between the 9th -11th October this year.
Designed to boost interest, enthuse a wider audience and raise participation, this faster more dynamic version of netball will feature shots from outside the circle, the ability to make substitutions at will, power play quarters, and a conceding team centre pass. The new rules will be demonstrated by the world’s six highest ranked teams, England, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Samoa and Malawi.
The event organisers have agreed a comprehensive ‘Legacy Plan’ containing many opportunities for netball which has attracted the support of Matalan, one of the UK’s leading clothing and home wear retailers.
The ‘Legacy Plan’ is an integral part of The Co-operative World Netball Series as it will support the development of netball at player, coach and official levels in schools and in the community. Prior to The Co-operative World Netball Series event, the Matalan Fast Net Festival will pilot the new version of the game, offering clubs and colleges in the North West region the opportunity to trial the new rules. It’s expected that over 550 adults will take part in the Matalan North West Regional Tournament.
Other Legacy events include the Matalan ‘Young Persons Education Programme’, helping young people to stay in the sport. Matalan’s support of the programme will ensure a lasting legacy for the region after the three day event. .
Nicola Moloney, organiser of The Co-operative World Netball Series said: “I’m delighted Matalan is the official legacy supporter of this new version of netball, our aim is to encourage as many people as possible to try out the new ‘Fast Net’ rules which are fast, ferocious and lots of fun!”
Commenting on the sponsorship, a spokesperson at Matalan said: “The Legacy Plan is a great opportunity to shout about the benefits of playing netball. We hope our involvement will provide new competitions in the form of ‘Fast Net’ to increase participation, volunteer opportunities, and mixed netball.”
